We banned a lot of stuff when our kids were young, and we made them do a lot of things for themselves that their friends' parents did for them. They objected a lot of the time.

When he got to middle school, the one who objected the most--who made my life most difficult over this--told us one day, nonchalantly, that it was "probably good" we didn't let him watch TV.

Still later, this son became a counselor at a sleep-away camp. When my husband and I visited, we found him bragging to a group of his friends that when he was a camper he packed his own stuff for camp, whereas some of his campers still got packed by their parents!

I was worried about the bragging, but his friends were hanging on every word. One of them--a fellow counselor--turned to us and said emphatically that he wished his parents had done the same thing!

I swear, that was one of the most gratifying experiences in my 31 years of motherhood. I'll never forget it.

It's tough saying no! Good for you for standing your ground about the phone. You're absolutely right, and one day, she'll know it.

I’ve followed you for so long on IG and I just can’t believe we’ve moved from magnatiles to phones! I’m trying to figure out how I can save this script for myself when it happens to me in 5 years
