My kids are 6 and 8- I can confirm that magnatiles have been used for 6 years, same with blocks. Our dinosaur phase has waned a bit but now they want all the Jurassic Park LEGO sets! And 7 years of Dino love has been a lot. My mom gave my 6 yo a set of tiny skeletons and he’s been playing with them for 4 days. Mario chess is another one where they really like to play chess but also love the fun of the figures. Thank you for trying to give us the wow moment too, play is still so important for older kids!

These guides are absolute gold. I’ve been struggling with the “wow” moment toys versus sustainable toys with longevity. These guides helped me rethink and realign with some of my values as I’m starting to tweak holiday wish lists. Also super helpful when we have three kids and already have soooo many toys! Got some new ideas for our one year old and three year old. Thank you!! So much hard work on your part to make things easier for us!

This is my absolute goal. Thank you so much for letting me know.

We are lucky enough to have some of my husband's childhood farm toys- real metal tractors and combines and cattle haulers, as well as the small plastic animals they support. They have earned a permanent spot in the living room for 13 years (my youngest is four). I think the combo of the fences, hay bales and equipment have kept the interest of my kids for years. The magnatiles often come out to build more corrrals or rodeo arenas, with the hot wheel making an appearance from time to time.

I love that. We had an old metal yellow Tonka dump truck that came to the beach, the park and the woods with us for years and years.

Shleic Animals, Magnatiles, Maileg Mice and Grimm blocks. My kids are 3.5 and 8. Sometimes I put all of these out sometimes I shelf things for a few months. But these toys are the ones that get the most play year after year. Also, since we do put away 60% of the toys and toy rotate, the biggest “WOW” moment is that I set out most of their toys on Christmas Eve for them to walk down to a playland lit with twinkle lights and candles and the nutcracker album on vinyl. It is my proudest parenting magic trick. And allows for hours and hours of mellow play on the 25th and well into the loooooong winter break days before New Year.
