So much this! I teach in a forest school model with an emergent curriculum. Basically, follow the children and their interests. The play is the work. The environment is a teacher. I had to get over the fact that it sometimes felt like I wasn't "teaching" anything because I wasn't obviously engaged with the children at all times. Rather, we are always observing interests, interactions, and conflicts so we can provide guidance and invitations for learning that specifically target their needs and interests. Interrupting deep play with questions or observations halts the learning. We step in for major conflicts to help them as they learn to navigate the social aspects, but it's amazing to see how a group of 3-5 year olds can navigate their own play and conflicts after just a few months of guidance!
