Something Playful #4
What I’m Sipping, What I’m Wearing, What I’m Texting My Teens & A Movie You’ll Want to Watch Together
Have I told you lately how happy I am to be here on Substack? It is a huge breath of fresh air to be able to provide more than just 5-second video clips and quick tips and tricks. You are a parent who understands the nuance. You deserve more than a trending reel. Thank you for being part of a community that wants to make childhood feel more like childhood.
This one is for the moms.
I have been trying to up my protein intake these days. I hate a chalky protein shake, and was very skeptical when I saw these clear protein drinks on Amazon. I thought for sure they would taste nasty, but I was willing to try. You guys? They are actually so good. No aftertaste, and 20 grams of protein! If you try them, I need to know what you think. I am obsessed. I just need to keep my kids from stealing them.
When I was a little bit younger and a lot more fashion conscious I used to invest in designer sunglasses. Eventually, I took accountability for the fact that I am not careful with my things. Those $$$ glasses always ended up bent, scratched, or lost in the dredges of crumbs and abandoned sweatshirts somewhere in my car. Since relegating myself to under $40 for sunglasses, I’ve been sporting an okay-ish Amazon pair. Until… I found these $35 Goodr’s. I love them and they look and feel much more expensive than they are.
I wore this Madewell sweater in my stories last week, and I have never gotten more DMs about a sweater.
I text my kids a picture of themselves as little kids, doing the stuff they loved. They usually roll their eyes, and that’s okay. I don’t write anything, and I don’t expect a response. I’ve never told them why I do it. But I’ll tell you why- I do it because I think being a teenager is hard. You are hurtling towards adulthood, responsibilities, and “being cool.” Their younger self is so close, but I imagine it feels so far away. I want my kids, even if it is just for a fleeting second, to remember what it felt like to put underwear on your head and wrap yourself in blankets and laugh and laugh. I want them to feel what it felt like to run through the muddy puddles in the woods or paint with no expectations of the outcome. Maybe it’s silly, but I’ll still do it.
Ramona and Beezus is my all-time comfort movie—and it’s also my 12-year-old daughter’s favorite, too. I posted on my IG stories that we were watching it, and so many people had never heard of it! You guys. This is the most heartwarming family movie of all time. And if you have a child with ADHD or Dyslexia like I do, you will love it even more.
